So, I got one of these to play with. Because everyone needs a giant plasticky 80s watch with more functions than common sense.

Also, like a need another project.

But! I actually have a specific, somewhat practical application in mind for this thingy!

So, that's all right then. Just so you know, when you see me with a giant plasticky 80s watch on my wrist.

Er, about that REST nonsense I mumbled about, earlier...

Coincidentally, I decided to resign my position at Transnational Three Letter Acronym to take a new senior role at Smaller Private Middleware company, ostensibly to work on a RESTful, AJAX application.

But, as usual, I'm not really doing a stitch of Javascript. I'm already waist-deep in some legacy code involving (wait for it) Lua and C++.

That's right, you read that correctly: I have paying work doing Lua. Every day. A shop that has multiple copies of PiL scattered about. A code-base that refers to meta-tables and co-routines. Excuse me while I squeal like a little girl for a moment.

Ok, better.

But, yeah. C++. My old nemesis. We meet again.

Taking a nice long REST

So, here it is, 2012, and I still don't know much about stuff like REST, AJAX and so on.

That is about to change. My work finally requires me to learn some of this shit, and leverage my secret acceptance of ECMAScript. Soon I'll be jQuerying and Node.jsing all over the place, you'll see.

It'll be great.

First step: deciding which books to get as ePubs, and which books to get dead-tree editions of. I think the grown-up Rhino book might need to be a printed copy. JavaScript seems more of a bathtub read.

Well, I really hope my team gets this RESTful stuff to work on. Legacy code is fine, and I'm great at it and all, but it does get rather tedious after awhile.

And installers. Mothers, don't let your kids grow up to be installer authors. There is no love or sanity in it.

So, about the weird colours.

I'm experimenting with having this site styled using the Solarized palette, which is pretty much how I have everything on my computer(s) setup.

From Eclipse to iTerm, from PuTTY to irssi, I use either the dark or light variety of Solarized for most of my interfaces.

We have a joke around here that gherkin is one of the funniest words, ever. It just is.

The internet seems to agree.

Unfortunately, the internets consider diphthong a better word. Not surprising, considering that there are approximately 12 ways to pronounce diphthong, all of them incorrect.

Well, well, well. What do we have here? Another abandoned blog!

I've written before about how services like Twitter and Tumblr and so on are essentially obviating the personal blog. This is probably still more-or-less true, though I'm not longer quite as convinced.

I've been catching up on some of the bloggers that I used to read regularly, and I still think there is an art to the short update, or the rambling essay from a particularly personal point-of-view. I've also been thinking about my online presence (such as it is) and how to manage that.

I've been reading things like this, too. For some time now I'm starting to realize I no longer get Twitter. When it was about an aggregate of people mentioning the bagel they just had for lunch, it seemed more personal and fun. Now that it has grown up as I have, I no longer appreciate the limits it places on dialogue. More and more I want to engage with locals on what I see as inconsistencies or limits in their opinions, and there just isn't room for a snarkless rebuttal on Twitter.

And I'm not snarkless very often, so it occurs to me I ought to direct my attentions elsewhere.

So, as a result, I've deleted my Twitter account(s).

I am also considering doing the same across the board. Every online presence I notice a cookie logging me into is suspect. I will continue to help out in a few forums related to photography and embedded development. And I will participate in real, moderated threads on StackOverflow related to technology and computing, given that this is my (erstwhile) career at the moment.

Likewise, LinkedIn is probably my busiest so-called social media membership, where I have the most connections, and those connections are very well-defined along the lines of: Can you, or someone you know, find me a job?

In today's uncertain times, this is no small thing.

But G+ and Facebook are on notice. Everyone likes to shit on Facebook, but G+ has not really bootstrapped itself past celebrity tweets, misinformed politicking, and adolescent arguments about god (or the lack thereof). Facebook is actually looking like the platform where I can minimally tend a tenuous connection with my "circles" and not be seen as a complete technophobe.

But who knows what might happen.

Anyway, this is why sections of my internet presence are going dark as I write this.

I can't really promise I'll blog more. But I am going to restrict my online diet somewhat and focus on my coding and my photography. So I might post more about those things again.

In conclusion: vote Rhino!
